Flash Click to Play

Ted Mielczarek has given the best example I know of why browser behavior should be user-extensible, whether via XUL or something else.

His flashblock Phoenix / Firebird plugin puts the user in control of Flash-based advertising: no more animated ads that can't be turned off, no more bits of the browser screen that don't respond to mouse wheels for no good reason. And all without giving up Flash entirely and putting up with the plugin popup windows, and having to switch to a different browser for the very occasional times you actually want to see Flash content.

I think Firebird is going to be my default Linux browser for a while now, and I may just switch on OS X too.

And for you Windows users out there, let me say again -- if you're using IE and haven't tried Mozilla or Firebird in a while (or ever), it's time. You'll be glad you did.

Glad to hear you like it. I have a newer version in the works. I got a nice design from someone else, so it looks way cooler, and I cleaned the code up a bit. Still trying to find a way to make it play nicely with “Disable extension”.

Plugin works fine with Mozilla, too.

Works just fine with Mozilla too.
p.s. - to disable, you have to do it manually at the moment. Plus, last I checked the code (foolishly) installs the plugin in the supposedly secret profile salted dir and the actual registration globally. You need to delete both.
Or, if you just want to temporarily disable, remove the rule in userContent.css

Ted’s site is down, and I cannot find any alternates out there… can anyone point me in the right direction?

sorry to ask, but exactly how is the extension disabled manually? Is there somewhere i can find step by step instructions?

To disable manually you can simply comment out the rule in your profile’s chrome/userContent.css file

Or, to remove it permanently, you have to delete the flashblock archive and listing in installed-chrome.txt and chrome.rdf
